Digital Parenting: A Librarian’s Guide to Teen Safety

Parenting in the digital age is a unique challenge. Our teenagers live in a world where information, connection, entertainment, and risks all travel through the same screen. As an information professional, or as someone who has spent years curating trusted sources, filtering noise, and teaching users how to navigate information safely, I believe that many of the principles we apply in libraries are exactly what parents need at home today.

Why Digital Parenting Matters

The Internet is a double-edged sword. It offers endless learning, creativity, and connection and many other of good stuff… However, it also exposes our children to misinformation, cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and addictive platforms. As guardians of their growth, we must equip them not just with filters but with frameworks for thinking critically and acting responsibly.

Digital parenting is not about policing every click. It is about guiding, mentoring, and empowering teenagers to become responsible “Netizens”. Here are simple, practical ways families can borrow the principles of librarianship to keep teens safe online.

Act 1: Build a Safe Digital Environment

Saudara semua… This is the 1st line of defence. You will need to ensure that you protect the fort at all costs by:

Install parental control on all devices to monitor and control their activities. Tools like Microsoft Family Safety for Windows and Xbox, Google Family Link for Android devices and Apple Screen Time for iOS can set screen time, filter content and produce a report of their activities.

Microsoft Family SafetyMicrosoft EcoSystemWindows, Xbox and Android DevicesScreen time limits, content filters, location sharing
Google Family LinkAndroid Users below 17Android and ChromeOSApp approvals, screen time, bedtime schedules
Apple Screen TimeApple EcoSystemiOS, macOS and iPadOSApp limits, downtime, content restrictions

Then we can secure our home network with DNS filters like the ones below to block harmful sites or adult content at the router level

OpenDNS Family ShieldQuick plug-and-play filteringRouter or device-levelPre-configured to block adult content

Pro tip: Set the DNS filter at your home router to protect every device connected to your Wi-Fi – phones, tablets, laptops, even smart TVs.

Act 2: Teach Digital Literacy, Not Just Rules

This step is about telling them to question everything so as not to blatantly accept whatever is written on the net. As a librarian, I have seen how powerful it is when young people learn to question what they see online. I always tell my kids that not everything online is true. They should learn to pause before believing, sharing, or reacting. Imagine if everyone did this. Just tell them to:

  • Evaluate sources. Who wrote this? Why? Is this credible? Is this true?
  • Spot manipulation. Clickbait, ragebait. Teach them to recognise emotional triggers and purposeful misinformation tactics by idiots.
  • And lastly, you will be defined by your social post. Tell them about digital footprints. Whatever is posted on the net shall become their identity.
  • And yes, not to forget. Tell them about oversharing. Not everything is ok to be shared. Again, once posted it will be there forever.

Act 3: Model Good Digital Behaviour

Bapak borek anaknya rintik. They learn from us and they observe more than they listen. If we role-model ourselves by scrolling responsibly, fact-checking news, avoiding toxic comment sections, putting the phone down during meals, and staying away from explicit materials… they are more likely to follow.

I think that digital parenting starts with digital self-awareness.

And, I also firmly believe that totalitarianism does not promote growth and intellectuality. Apart from instilling control and limitations, there must be room for discussion. Rules without relationships breed rebellion. Instead of just saying “No!” say “Let’s discuss.”

Tell why some of the applications or games are off-limits. There must be reasons why Roblox is out but Minecraft is open. Why screen-time is off at 8.30 PM. Ini semua ada jawabnya wahai anak2ku.

Act 4: Self-Space Protection

We have protected our fort, but we must also make sure that they play their role as well. A castle is only as mighty as those who guard it. No point in having the strongest, the strictest firewall if the user is the weakest link. Help them learn to:

  • Use strong passwords
  • Enable 2FA
  • Understand phishing tricks
  • Keep personal info private
  • Report harmful behaviour

Digital resilience is a skill they will carry into adulthood.

Final Thoughts: From Control to Collaboration

Digital parenting is not about surveillance or control, but it is about stewardship. This is about guiding our teens through the digital wilderness with wisdom, empathy, and shared curiosity. As a librarian, I have always believed in access with responsibility. As father… or better as parent, I extend that belief into my home.

Let us raise a generation that’s not just tech-savvy, but ethically grounded, critically minded, and compassionately connected.

Upgraded to Unifi VIP20

Last week, I received a call from TMNET offering me to upgrade my UniFi VIP10 to UniFi VIP20 for just RM219 (RM232.14 with GST) per month instead of RM263.94. OKlah tu, discount around RM30.

Usually, I do not even care to pickup if telemarketer calls, but I did that day. Well TMNET got me that day. Now I have restarted my 24-Months with them. Nice. 😐

This one… old already. Now on UniFi 50… Long story short, nanti contract dah nak habis… TM akan offer upgrade punya. huhuhu

Something is wrong with Tumblr

I think there is something not right with our adored and precious Tumblr. Well forget about other people who have issues with Tumblr. It does not work for me. Some images do not even load. It looks atrocious.

tumblr1

If the image is viewed directly, browser will show this error message:

tumblr

Is Tumblr disallowing linking to their hosted imaged? Well, I do not know. /sigh

Upon googling for “tumblr AccessDenied“, I came across with an interesting article “Why do images from some Tumblr pages not load, but using wget on them works?

After some reading, now I understand this has something to do with their servers. This is no network issue. As wget to that image works and that image is available in Tumblr. If some minor changes are made to the url of that image, it will show as usual.

Take this as example:

http://31.media.tumblr.com/99451fbb1d17a72822f774b06d8fedf1/tumblr_n89wv3ionq1qefimno1_1280.jpg <- This link will not work.

But if we change that 31 to say 41 the image will appear as usual.

Example: http://41.media.tumblr.com/99451fbb1d17a72822f774b06d8fedf1/tumblr_n89wv3ionq1qefimno1_1280.jpg

Hmmmm.

It ain’t TM’s fault this time…

I have noticed that my internet connection is not as speedy as it used to be. Higher Latency, slow response time, turtle + snail like internet connection. Something is not right somewhere… Yes definitely, something is happening out there.

If it so happens just at home… then TM is to blame. My office super internet connection also flops and so does my Mobile Internet. It ain’t TM NET this time round.

A quick search on the internet reveals something. A report reads…

Fault in AAG Submarine Cable Causes Massive Internet Slowdown Across Southeast Asia

And as usual, bunch of angry users is constantly blaming TM Net for this. Well, look at the bright side. Slow internet means less gaming which will result into better sleep and well CENSORED (small kids please stay away).

Yeahaaaa.

Virus ke? False alarm kot!!!

Salam Sejahtera

<?php
$variable1 = “restart computer”;
$variable2 = reboot($variable1);
do {
echo “{$boot[‘boot’]} <br />”;} while ($boot= mysql_fetch_assoc($reboot));
?>

Rupanya virus definition McAffee telah identify svchost.exe sebagai virus dan didelete dari komputer. Jahanam!!! Engadget melaporkan:

“DAT update 5958 deletes the svchost.exe file, which then triggers a false-positive in McAfee itself and sets off a chain of uncontrolled restarts and loss of networking functionality.”

So amacam sekarang?

EBSCO has acquired NetLibrary

Effective Wednesday, March 17th, EBSCO Publishing and OCLC finalized an agreement whereby EBSCO has acquired NetLibrary, a leading eBook platform and service.  It has been a pleasure working with OCLC, who saw EBSCO as the ideal candidate to continue to serve NetLibrary customers, and take the service to new heights.

EBSCO’s goal is to better serve research by offering the strongest possible collection of materials and the greatest accessibility and usability.  As eBooks become more prominently used and relied upon by libraries, they are an ideal addition to the EBSCO suite of resources.  As EBSCOhost is the single most-used premium research platform in libraries worldwide, and overall usage continues to steadily increase, it follows logically that searching databases and eBooks on a single platform would create a more complete, fruitful one-stop research experience for end users.  Many librarians have requested we move in this direction, and we are pleased to be doing so.

At present, EBSCO will continue to support and enhance the NetLibrary platform, with the goal of enabling EBSCOhost to appropriately incorporate eBook availability in the near future.  In the coming months, we will be conducting focus groups, advisory sessions and usability testing to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of eBook platforms, and investigate the various models for accessibility and purchase.  We will provide updates on our progress as we move forward.  Additionally, we plan to maintain the dark archive of eBooks to ensure accessibility for customers who have purchased and will continue to purchase NetLibrary eBooks.  MARC records for these eBooks will also continue to be provided (at no cost).

Thank you for your patronage and support of EBSCO resources.  We are excited about what the future holds for EBSCOhost users.  If you have any questions regarding your current NetLibrary account, or would like to explore eBooks in subject sets or on a title by title level, please contact your EBSCO representative.
